The Bahamian Conch Salad

Let’s talk about traditional Bahamian food.  The Bahamas is famous for their conch salad.  You are probably thinking what is conch.  Well, conch is a shell-fish.  Basically, the “meat” is inside a shell. The meat is tender and savory which can be eaten raw.  Now you know what is a conch.  Let me tell you about the conch salad.   During my weekend getaway to The Bahamas, I had a conch salad every day.  I must have died and gone to heaven about three times.

The conchs are caught fresh every day.  Whatever you do, don’t ever eat conch that is in a can and/or frozen.   You basically lose the flavor and freshness.  Any who, when you order a conch salad, it is made right in front of you by the locals.  There are two types of conch – tropical which include fruits and the original.   You can’t go wrong with either one of them.

The conch salad ingredients are:

  • Diced onions
  • Diced green peppers
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Diced Mango and pineapple (Tropical conch)
  • Diced conch

If you like spicy food, you add pepper and I am not talking about black pepper.  I am talking about the pepper that will clear up your sinuses.  You add a dash of salt.   You then squeeze fresh limes (not lemon) — lime.  For the tropical, you also squeeze fresh oranges as well.   Everything is mixed together on the counter.

There is no big bowl for tossing.  Nope, the preparer is massaging all the juices and ingredients together.

When it is all done, the conch salad is placed in a plastic bowl or container with a spoon.  You just walk away with a big grin and go to your corner and eat.

Lastly, sharing is not an option.  Yummy and oh so good.
