Philadelphia Meetup: Disc Golf

Disc Golf! What the heck is it? When I saw the event on the Black Philadelphia meetup group, I had questions. The organizer was very descriptive and provided us the video. But did I go and check out the video, nope! I wanted to go in completely naive. That is the part of the joy of trying something new.

Now the only thing I did do before the meetup was to buy the disc from Amazon. I will be honest, it was in the box until the day of the event. Judge me….lol.

What is Disc Golf?

Disc golf is a flying disc sport in which players throw a disc at a target; it is played using rules similar to golf. It is usually played on a course with 9 or 18 holes.

Basically, it is throwing a Frisbee into the basket and you’re about 50 to 100 feet away from said object. It does take skill.

There are three types of disc: distance, mid-range, and putter.

Distance Drivers, as their name suggests, have the greatest potential to travel the greatest distance. The mid-Range disc is for shorter shots and approaching the target. Putters are intended to fly shorter distances and on straighter lines.

The Art of Disc Golf

Once we got the instructions on how to play, I left my comfort zone and said “I can do this”. About 5 minutes in, I ended up asking myself “what am I doing!?” At the end of the activity, I found out that I will not be going pro nor be an Olympian, but it was much fun.

Anywho, here are some pictures and videos of our Disc Golf adventure.

So after today’s activity of Disc Golf, I decided that Google needs to be my friend. Disc Golf is a professional sport and the organization is working on it to become an Olympic sporting event.

It is safe to say that our group will not be pros but we had so much fun and became friends.

Make sure to look into the local meetup in your city for unique and fun activities.
