Punta Cana Perspectives: A Travel Diary

As a travel enthusiast who has explored over 50 countries, I recently embarked on a quick 3-day getaway to Punta Cana, opting for an adult-only all-inclusive resort. Initially hesitant due to historical tensions between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, I reconsidered, realizing that avoiding countries with mistreated ethnic groups would limit my travels. My stay at the resort challenged my perceptions and provided unexpected insights. Join me as I share my experiences and discoveries at an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana.

Day 1: Arrival and First Impressions

Upon touchdown, navigating customs was a breeze—a pleasant surprise compared to some of my past adventures.   The resort itself was a sight to behold, boasting a stunning lobby and a pool area that beckoned for a dip. After a smooth check-in, I was introduced to my Marriott concierge, who would help make my stay even more enjoyable.

As I requested an upgrade, I had to wait for my room to become available.  My initial request was a garden view.  “Status does have its privileges.”  Pay less and request an upgrade.  While I didn’t snag the swim-up suite I coveted, my partial beach view room did not disappoint. Watching the sunrise from my balcony was a serene start to my resort stay.

Eager to make the most of the all-inclusive experience, I decided to explore the resort and the dining options. With five restaurants to choose from, I was spoilt for choice. The food was generally good, though not exceptional. However, I did have one question – if I am in the Caribbean – the Dominican Republic, why are they not serving any foods from the country?   There was Indian, Italian, Steak, Buffet, and Ceviche.  None of those screamed Dominican.

Anywho, I let it go but still inquiring minds do want to know.  However, the highlight of the day was definitely the peacefulness of the adult-only environment, allowing for a truly relaxing atmosphere without the sound of children.

Day 2: Work and Realizations

The second day took an unexpected turn. Despite being on a “sneaky” vacation, I found myself needing to attend to some urgent work matters for my nine-to-five job. I spent a good part of the day in front of a laptop – either at the pool or in my room; which was not how I had envisioned spending my getaway.

As the day progressed and the work was done, I started to feel a bit confined within the resort. The all-inclusive experience, while convenient, began to feel somewhat restrictive, akin to being on a cruise but on land. I missed the adventure of exploring local eateries and immersing myself in the culture of the country.

The resort offered a range of activities, but they did not appeal to me.  I found myself simply unwinding and soaking in the serene environment and watching the antics of the other guests.

Day 3: Making the Most of It

On my final day, work still loomed, but I was determined to make the most of my time. After wrapping up my calls, I indulged in some much-needed R&R by the pool, sipped cocktails at one of the many bars, and ate French Fries (my weakness).

Conclusion: A Mixed Bag with Potential for Others

Looking back, my brief retreat to Punta Cana was a mixed bag, and not due to work. The adult-only all-inclusive resort provided a hassle-free and relaxing environment, complete with dining options, a beautiful beach, and a tranquil atmosphere. However, I found the lack of flexibility and the feeling of being confined within the resort’s walls to be downsides. While all-inclusive resorts may not be my go-to for future travels, I understand their appeal for those seeking a hassle-free vacation.
