The day had finally arrived.
But why did I have a 5:00 a.m. pickup?
You already know how that goes.
The night before, you never really sleep because you’re convinced you’re going to sleep through the alarm.
I think I woke up at least four times just to check the time.
By the time the alarm actually went off, I was already awake.
To their credit, the tour guide was right on time.
Since this was a shared tour, we had several hotel stops before officially starting the drive.
Now from Cancún to Chichén Itzá, it’s about a 2.5-hour drive.
The moment I got comfortable in my seat, I immediately fell asleep.
No hesitation.
I was not about to fight that early wake-up call.
The Unexpected Detour
The first thing I remember after dozing off was us stopping unexpectedly.
I looked up and noticed the entrance to the highway was closed, and the policía were there.
Now, not understanding a word of Spanish, I was definitely paying attention.
Apparently, there had been an accident, and we needed to take a detour.
And so, let the fun begin.
Instead of the direct route, we ended up driving through the countryside of Mexico.
Honestly?
I took a couple more naps.
You would think I’d be worried.
Nah.
Not even a little.
At that point, I was just along for the ride.
Then I started noticing something odd.
We were now two time zones behind.
Heading west??
I had to laugh because at this point I had no clue where exactly we were, only that we were clearly taking the scenic route.
As we drove through the small towns and countryside, one thing immediately came to mind:
The food out here is probably so good.
Something about seeing local life outside the tourist zones always reminds me that the real soul of a place lives beyond the resorts.
The colors.
The homes.
The roads.
The little towns we passed through.
It felt like an unexpected glimpse into another side of Mexico.
And honestly, that detour might have ended up being part of the experience.
Sometimes the road to the destination becomes part of the story.
And then, I finally made it.
Finally, My Seventh Wonder: Chichén Itzá
Standing there, looking at it in person, I truly believe there was a reason this had to be the last one.
There was something different about this experience.
It was not just about checking a box on a travel list.
It was about history.
Legacy.
Resistance.
The more I learned about the Mayan civilization, the more I understood why this place carries so much weight.
Hearing about the history of the Mayan people, especially their resistance to colonization in the Yucatán region, made this visit feel bigger than tourism.
It became a moment of reflection.
A reminder that history is not just what survives in books, but what survives in people, in culture, and in memory.
What struck me most was learning about the preservation of the Mayan language and traditions.
With globalization and the increasing pull toward dominant global languages, there is a real concern that indigenous languages and cultural practices could continue to decline over time.
And what a shame that would be.
There is something deeply powerful about standing in a place where an entire civilization once thrived and realizing that the fight to preserve identity is still ongoing.
This was more than just my seventh Wonder.
This was one of those travel moments that stays with you.
Full Circle
And just like that, the journey that started years ago with my first international trip came full circle.
Seven Wonders.
Seven moments in time.
Seven reminders that the world is far bigger, richer, and more layered than anything we can learn from a screen.
Standing in front of Chichén Itzá, I wasn’t just looking at my final Wonder.
I was looking at years of courage, curiosity, and choosing to keep going.
What started as a simple goal became something much bigger, a reminder that the most meaningful milestones in life are rarely achieved overnight.
They are built trip by trip, lesson by lesson, and moment by moment.
This was more than checking off the final Wonder.
This was closure.
And somehow, also the beginning of whatever comes next.
Continue the Journey
This moment may have been the final Wonder, but it was also part of a much bigger journey.
